Hello sunshine! Why we need Vitamin D
Jun 08, 2022
We’re all pleasantly familiar with the fact that being in the sunshine automatically increases our happy hormones. Everything looks brighter, there’s more to do outside, and beer gardens are open.
*Cue ‘Everybody Loves the Sunshine’…
Our bodies love a bit of sunlight exposure, as we can create Vitamin D3 through sunlight absorbed through the skin. But did you know that only a certain proportion of the body’s vitamin D3 is made through skin absorption?
You could set up camp on the sun’s surface (wouldn’t recommend), and your body still wouldn’t make the correct amount of Vitamin D without it being present in the diet. So even if you’re lucky enough to live in a country where you’re graced with constant sunshine, it never hurts to up your Vitamin D intake through dietary means.
What’s all the fuss about then?
Here’s a few Vitamin D3 rich foods you might wanna try adding to your diet!
Dietary sources of Vitamin D include:
- Red meat
- Oily fish
- Egg yolks
- Mushrooms
Do I need Vitamin D3 when I have the sunshine?
Approaching the summer season, the body’s demand for extra Vitamin D3 is lower - especially if you’re outdoors and basking in the sunlight everyday. But if you aren’t getting enough Vitamin D from your diet, it’s probably a good idea to check it out. You might want to increase your intake of Vitamin D supplements later on in the year when we face shorter days and less sunlight (boo) - so perhaps start off small and then up your dose in the autumn.

Well. When you try some sunshine in a bottle (we’re working on a letterbox friendly pouch), you feel the benefits rather quickly.
