Can Supplements Help Manage ADHD?

ADHD, which stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, is a neurodevelopmental disorder that can impact daily life, academic performance, and personal relationships. In this blog, we’ll explore what ADHD is, some common signs to look out for, and discuss whether certain supplements can help manage the condition. Continue reading to learn more!

What is ADHD?

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterised by persistent symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that interfere with daily functioning. It is most commonly diagnosed in childhood, but it often continues into adolescence and adulthood. People with ADHD may struggle to focus, stay organised, or control impulses, which can lead to challenges in school, work, and social interactions. There are three primary types of ADHD, depending on which symptoms are most dominant:

  • Predominantly Inattentive Presentation: Difficulty paying attention, easily distracted, disorganised.
  • Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive Presentation: Fidgeting, difficulty staying still, and impulsive actions.
  • Combined Presentation: Symptoms of both inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity.

While the exact cause of ADHD isn’t fully understood, genetics, brain structure, and environmental factors are all believed to play roles.

What are the signs of ADHD?

ADHD symptoms can vary widely, but there are several common signs that may indicate the presence of the disorder.

Inattention

  • Difficulty paying attention to details
  • Frequent daydreaming or a tendency to lose focus easily.
  • Trouble staying organised, resulting in misplaced items or forgotten tasks.
  • Frequently losing track of time or struggling to meet deadlines.

 Hyperactivity

  • Feeling restless, often fidgeting or moving around excessively.
  • Difficulty remaining seated, such as in meetings or school settings.
  • Talking excessively or interrupting conversations without realising it.
  • Displaying an overall sense of energy that may seem excessive to others.

Impulsivity

  • Acting without thinking, often leading to risky or poorly thought-out decisions.
  • Difficulty delaying gratification or waiting for their turn in group settings.
  • Emotional responses that may seem more intense or exaggerated.

Although everyone will occasionally experience some of these behaviours, a diagnosis of ADHD is typically based on a pattern of behaviours that consistently affect multiple areas of life. If you or someone you know exhibits several of these symptoms, it may be worth consulting with a healthcare provider for a professional assessment.

Can Supplements Help with ADHD?

ADHD is commonly managed through a combination of behavioural therapy, counselling, and medications. However, some individuals look into natural remedies and supplements as complementary strategies. Let’s explore a few supplements that are commonly discussed in relation to ADHD!

Individuals with ADHD tend to have lower levels of zinc and iron, which are minerals that play a role in regulating dopamine - a neurotransmitter associated with attention and impulse control. It is thought that zinc and iron supplementation may be beneficial in improving symptoms of ADHD, however the evidence is mixed and more research is needed to confirm the effects of these supplements on ADHD.

Some studies have found that magnesium supplementation, especially in combination with vitamin B6, may be beneficial for people with ADHD. Magnesium has a calming effect on the nervous system and may help reduce hyperactivity and impulsive behaviours!

Studies have also shown that children with ADHD tend to have lower serum vitamin D levels, and vitamin D may improve cognitive function in children with ADHD.

One study has shown that omega-3 supplementation improved symptoms of inattention in boys with as well as without ADHD. Omega-3s are thought to support better neural communication, which could potentially help with focus and mood regulation!

While some studies suggest potential benefits of these supplements for ADHD, it’s important to approach them with caution, as some may interact with prescribed medications. We advise speaking with a GP before taking any new supplements to ensure they are suitable!

Conclusion

ADHD can involve a range of different symptoms and can be challenging to manage, but there are many strategies, both conventional and complementary that may provide support. Medications and behavioural therapies remain the most effective treatments for many individuals with ADHD, but supplements may offer additional benefits!
