Eggs can be considered to be a superfood, because they are packed with many essential nutrients! They are low in carbohydrates and calories, and are a great source of healthy fats and protein. One egg contains around 6-7g protein, which can help us feel fuller for longer, and they contain all 9 essential amino acids, which make them a great option when building and maintaining muscle mass. They also contain essential vitamins such as vitamin A, D, zinc, calcium, phosphorus, selenium and all the B vitamins, making it an excellent food to help hit your daily micronutrient targets. Eggs also contain zeaxanthin and lutein, which are antioxidants that provide eye protective effects.

Are Egg Whites Healthier Than Egg Yolks?

Egg whites are a popular high protein food option, but is it better to have egg whites on their own rather than having whole eggs? There is a slight difference between the nutritional content of the yolk and the egg white, but when it comes to the protein content, it's split almost evenly between the yolk and the white. The egg white mostly contains protein and the yolk is higher in fats - but both contain important nutrients, and it is therefore more beneficial to have the whole egg rather than having the egg whites or yolks by themselves!

Eggs And Cardiovascular Health

It's a common misconception that eating eggs increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases due to their high levels of dietary cholesterol, however this has been debunked many times! The cholesterol found in eggs is not well absorbed, and the dietary cholesterol does not affect blood lipid profiles in healthy individuals. One meta-analysis found no significant association between egg consumption and the risk of coronary heart disease. In fact, egg consumption has been linked to a reduced risk of coronary heart disease and stroke! So don’t be scared to include eggs as a part of a varied and balanced diet (unless you are allergic of course!)

How To Incorporate More Eggs Into Your Diet

Eggs are versatile and can be incorporated into so many different dishes. You can have them on their own - fried, boiled, scrambled, poached… If you’re having a pasta dish, you can instantly increase the nutritional content of the dish by stirring an egg yolk into the pasta before adding any sauce. Eggs can also be added into fried rice, in soups, bakes and sauces - who doesn’t love a pasta carbonara!?
