What is Movember and why is men’s health advocacy important?

Movember is a campaign which encourages participants to grow moustaches as a visible symbol of support and to spark conversations about overlooked health topics. The movement helps raise awareness and funds for men’s health issues, including prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health, and suicide prevention.

In the UK, men live on average 4 years less than women, and this isn’t just due to biology - social norms and cultural expectations play a significant role in men’s health outcomes. In addition to physical health outcomes, men are disproportionately affected by mental health issues, yet they are far less likely to seek help. In fact, men account for 75% of suicides, with many struggling in silence due to stigma.

Key men's health issues

Certain health conditions only affect men. For instance, prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men, affecting 1 in 8 men during their lifetime - however, it's highly treatable when detected early, but many men don’t get screened regularly. Another important topic is testicular cancer, which primarily affects younger men between the ages of 15 and 35. While it’s less common than prostate cancer, it’s highly treatable if detected early!

Mental health is another crucial topic. Studies show that men use medical services and preventative and health-promoting measures less often than women, presumably due to their conformity to masculine norms. The consequences of this can be severe, as it delays diagnosis and treatment for preventable conditions, and it can also promote the use of alcohol and drugs as self-medication. Due to the use of unhealthy coping strategies, depressive symptoms and stress can intensify, leaving suicide as the last option for many men to cope with depression.

Ways to promote mens health

In regards to physical health, it is important to talk to your GP about prostate cancer screening, especially if you're over 50 or have a family history of the disease, and to stay informed about the symptoms such as frequent urination or discomfort while sitting. To ensure early detection and prevent the progression of testicular cancer, it is advised to perform monthly self-checks to feel for any unusual lumps or changes, and don’t ignore pain or swelling, if this occurs talk consult with your GP immediately!

It is also especially important to promote conversations about men's mental health as it is often stigmatised. You can help promote men’s mental health by encouraging and participating in Movember conversations, which provide tools for opening up discussions. It is also important to recognise the signs of stress, anxiety, or depression, and to reach out for support by talking to a friend, family member, or therapist when needed.

Supplements that can support men's health

In addition to regular checkups and bringing awareness to important topics, supplements can play a supportive role in men’s health. While they aren’t a replacement for a healthy diet and lifestyle, the right supplements can help address specific nutritional gaps or health concerns.

There are certain nutrients that are needed in greater amounts in men compared to women, these include zinc, magnesium, and vitamin B6. This is because these support testosterone production, which is the primary male sex hormone. Low levels of these nutrients can impair testosterone production, in which case a supplement may be beneficial!

There are also herbal supplements that can help - saw palmetto is a popular supplement for prostate health, and studies have shown that it may be effective in relieving symptoms caused by prostate enlargement. Ashwagandha is also another popular supplement that can help support men’s health, as studies have shown it can help increase testosterone levels and support fertility in men!

In conclusion

Movember is a vital movement advocating for men’s health on a global scale. By addressing physical and mental health challenges, encouraging early detection, and breaking down harmful stigmas, Movember empowers men to take charge of their well-being. Whether it’s growing a moustache, having important conversations, or making lifestyle changes, every effort contributes to a future where men can live healthier, longer lives. Together, we can close the gaps in men’s health outcomes and ensure that no man suffers in silence.
